Honouring the Sacred Sabbath of Samhain by Michelle Taylor

Samhain is a welcoming of the spirits and creations that have passed over beyond form through Death. The season is Autumn into Winter. This is a time to honour what is passing away. Our focus is on gratitude for the Harvest, gratitude for our ancestors—ancestors of both bloodline and ‘spiritline’. Samhain is also a powerful time for releasing what is falling away; things like, outworn habits and modes of thinking that once served us, but no longer. This release allows for a re-focusing of goals & dreams forged in greater wisdom and experience.

‘The Goddess and The Green Man’ website speaks of the ancient wisdom and foundations from whence the potency and essence of Samhain has sprung:

"Traditionally the veils between the worlds are at their thinnest now. Boundaries dissolve and all is laid bare. It is time to honour and offer hospitality to, our ancestors.

At Samhain the dark half of the year commences. It is a truly magical time. A Time of the Crone. Death is always followed by rebirth and while this is the end of the old year, it is the beginning of the new year. For the Celts the day did not begin at dawn, it began at sunset, it began with darkness. Light is always born out of darkness, they are inseparable, interdependent, and necessary. Darkness is fertile with 'all potential'. With the beginning of this dark phase comes the opportunity to rest and reflect on the past and to dream of new beginnings. The seed now hidden in the earth will germinate in its season. Look for the seeds in yourself!"

This is truly a ‘wholistic’ and healthy way to navigate the turning of the wheel towards the darker half of the year and integrating life’s more sobering experiences. Samhain shows us that by embracing life’s inevitable endings, whether through death, loss, or growing beyond limitations that once served us, we honour these and our selves by consciously releasing them with the acknowledgement of a grateful heart.

Samhain Blessings to all!
